Martin Van Buren was born on December 5, 1782 (Happy Birthday Marty!).  The eight President of the United States, he was the first president born a US citizen.  Martin was born in a Dutch speaking area of New York State and he is the only US President to speak English as his second language.  The National Park Service maintains Martin’s Kinderhook, NY home.  You can tour the site virtually or visit in person from May to October.

The GOP Is The Food Stamp Party

fuckyeahfeminists:

Bloomberg recently compiled U.S. Department of Agriculture data and found that, “70 percent of counties with the fastest growth in food-stamp aid during the last four years voted for the Republican presidential candidate in 2008.”

To The Right-Wing

social-darwin-awards:

My heartfelt apologies to those who will, or believe they will, lose their jobs or homes or what have you under the new Obama administration. You can’t help all of the people all of the time. My heart goes out to the people, not necessarily well off, who gambled something on this election and lost. To any and all Republicans who will face taunting or mocking or attacks, I am deeply sorry. No one should be discriminated against for their political beliefs. Our soldiers on the front lines, whatever political alignment you may be, you are brave and patriotic, and I hope for your safe return. I can only hope that Obama’s next four years will be at least as successful as the last, and that he find yet more ways to prove his detractors wrong. White or black, gay or straight, secular or religious, liberal or conservative, Democrat or Republican, we are all Americans, and we should all treat each other with respect and compassion.

Good night, America. I love you.

Just to provide some perspective on the accusation that Obama spends like a college freshman who just got a credit card. It’s no wonder Republicans hate fact-checkers…

…paying more taxes — that’s by far the most efficient way to get this budget balanced.

MITT ROMNEY.

So he wants people to pay more taxes?

Except the rich.

“This is a time when we all should reflect on those who continue to give, even the last measure, of service and sacrifice, to promoting and defending America’s interests abroad. This is above all a reminder that politics should end at the water’s edge.” — Jon Huntsman

deadpresidents:

Hey, Governor Romney, did you hear that?  In case you missed it, it’s the quote right above these sentences.  You know, the one by the Mormon former Governor who should be President.  No…no, not the one in the mirror — the one that is completely reasonable and intelligent and actually gives me hope that we can actually heal the divisions in our country.

I call on all nonreligious to vote third party!

loverandnotafighter:

Whether you are simply nonreligious, or if you are an atheist, agnostic, freethinker, secularist, humanist, atheist plus, or any other identifier, I call on YOU to stand up in November and vote third parties, like the Green Party, who openly and strongly believe in the complete separation of church and state, and who believe not in making laws based on ‘god’s will,’ but on reason, logic, and scientific knowledge! This is my call to YOU to stand up for what is right and NOT for what is easy! I want YOU to vote third party!

It’s a great cause and yes, I wish voting third party was realistic.

But if you vote for a third party, you are helping Mitt Romney win and ultimately, anything that he does involving religion will be worse than Obama. At least Obama doesn’t believe that Native Americans are direct descendants of Hebrews or that the garden of Eden is in Missouri.

If you want science, reason, and logic anywhere in the office of the president, please vote for Obama.

Vote for third party candidates in local elections FIRST, where they can actually make progress. That’s the way to get exposure and future voters. One day, a third party run for president might be possible if you start at the local level.

Now, however, a third party vote is a vote for Romney to win. And that would be disastrous.

Taken together, its proposals would produce the largest redistribution of income from the bottom to the top in modern U.S. history, while increasing poverty and inequality more than any measure in recent times and possibly in the nation’s history.
